Artist Statement
I have always found art to be a special interest that lead me into pursuing art not only as a pastime, but also as an integral part of my career in education. It wasn’t until I took a couple of art courses at the University of Calgary that I was able to incorporate art into my life as a teacher and years later as an art consultant helping other teachers teach art to their students.
Over many years I have daubled in the various media of clay, watercolour, acrylic and oil paints. Once I retired and while living in Richmond Hill, I went to Newmarket School of Art, where there was a mix of an open studio and the insightful teachings of Martin Pyrce, an artist. I think it was the energy of others that enriched and expanded my enjoyment of painting.
My favourite medium for years was oil paints - vibrant and smooth to work with. However, recently I am enjoying how acrylics can be layered to peak through and can be built upon with related colours and values. I also enjoy how each brush stroke can create an important shape or a tiny significant pop of colour.
Today as I look back I recall the pleasure I saw children get out of art and as I look to the future I can’t see being without a place to wile away hours over a painting. It isn’t always easy, nor is every painting a success, but there is self-satisfaction and peace while working on a painting.
There is also always a wish you could learn more, do something new and share art with others.
